Conversation Methods

We find what’s after now together.  We discover it by creating and entering fields of deep listening where truth is freely spoken.  For many years, many of us have been learning and practicing together to host these fields of dialogue and deep conversation.  This guide provides an overview of the core methods for dialogue I used in Japan.  Our work begins by creating a relational space; we call it BA in Japan.  Within that space, we use different methods – Circle, Appreciative Inquiry, Storytelling Trios, World Café, Open Space Technology, ProAction Café and NOWCast.

An Invitation To Create A Future Together

One afternoon my friend Taka Nomura and I were talking and decided to come up with some simple guidelines and questions for powerful conversations.  This was just before the Japanese Edition of When We Cannot See the Future, Where Do We Begin was released.  This guide may help you find a place to begin as you invite a new conversation in your family, business, organization or community.

Bibliography

It’s in the book, but some have asked for easy access to the books, articles and websites listed in AfterNow’s bibliography.

Voices from My Larger Community

The 11th chapter of AfterNow was a surprise.  It was added at the 11th hour.  Here’s what happened.  I started asking colleagues and friends to review the final draft of the book and offer their comments.  I was blown away.  And then overwhelmed.  Which do I put in the book?  I eventually realized that they were ALL part of the book because these were the voices from the community in which I’ve done most of my learning.  Their perspective on the messages of AfterNow are important and illuminating.

Other Resources

From time to time I will add other resources to the AfterNow website that I want to call to reader’s attention, using this space as a kind of spotlight.

I also direct your attention to Food For Thought on the NewStories website, which is a large collection of materials those of us in the NewStories field have found useful. There’s also an opportunity there for you to recommend other materials for the collection.
